There used to be a monastery there. Then, in its place, a colony for people suffering from leprosy was established. Anyone in the whole country suspected of having the disease was forcibly taken out of their homes and exiled to this remote area. Romanian Tichilești, also called The Valley of Tears, is the last leper village in Europe.
