The 20th International Film Festival Etnofilm Čadca 2018 will take place from 20 to 23 November 2018 in the Kysuce Cultural Center in Čadca and The House of Culture in Čadca, Slovakia.


ETNOFILM is an international biennial film festival devoted to ethnology as well as social and cultural anthropology in a wide sense of the term.


The main goals of the festival:

  • to screen recent documentaries on cultural and social diversity of the human community and raise awareness of the general public, filmmakers and media about the necessity of its protection
  • to encourage new productions on the above topics by giving awards
  • to support the development of Slovak film in the field of visual anthropology
  • to organize expert meetings during the festival

Etnofilm Čadca 2018 shall devote special attention to the films on cultural diversity of the European nations, the cornerstone of the European cultural heritage.

ETNOFILM offers free admission to all festival screenings and side events.



a/ Films can be submitted by filmmakers, producers or distributors – institutions as well as physical persons

b/ There is no entry fee for the submitted films. Submission is free of charge and the organizer does not pay any screening fee to the Entrant as well.

c/ A free online entry form placed at the festival website must be duly filled out and submitted by the entrant no later than 25 May 2018. Incomplete entries shall not be presented to the Pre-Selection Jury for evaluation.

d/ Only documentary films produced after January 1st, 2016 which have not been submitted to the preceding ETNOFILM ČADCA 2016, are eligible to compete.

e/ The Entrant declares herewith he is authorized to submit the entry film to the international film competition and does not violate the copyright of the film authors. The Organizer shall not be held liable for possible violations of rights resulting from unauthorized submission of a film to the contest.



The inscriptions are possible from 1 February 2018.

a/ Online entry forms should be duly filled out and submitted no later than 25 May 2018.

b/ Films can be either uploaded through a video link ( e.g. VIMEO, YouTube and other video channels, if protected, please, indicate the password) or can also be delivered on DVD to the following address: Kysucké kultúrne stredisko, Moyzesova 50, 022 01 Čadca, Slovak Republic. c/ A complete commentary or dialogue list in English, or Slovak has to be attached to the online entry form.

d/ The following promotion material has to be submitted through the online entry form - A synopsis of the film, a short biography and filmography of the director, one photograph of the director, three photographs presenting the film.

e/ Technical requirements for film entries: recommended format HD 1080p, codec H.264 or X264, H.265, accepted container MPG, MPG2, MP4, MOV, WMV.

f/ The organizer shall use the submitted entry film for the screening purposes during the festival. Afterwards the film will be included in the Festival Archive for documentation purposes and eventual further non-commercial use (research, education, post-festival screenings).

g/ Non-compliance with the Inscription requirements entitles the Organizer to reject the entry from the international contest.



The Pre-Selection Jury decides which films are accepted to enter the festival competition. Members of the Pre-Selection Jury will be nominated by the Festival Organizing Committee. Every entrant will be informed about the decisions made by the Pre-Selection Jury by 15 August 2018 via e-mail. Pre-selection results shall be also communicated via the festival website The films in the main competition shall be screened in the course of the festival. The Pre-Selection Jury is authorized not to select films whose technical quality or content do not comply with the Festival Regulations and its mission.



The International Jury, nominated by the Organizing Committee, is responsible for evaluating submitted films and awarding the prizes. The panel of judges consists of five members, all personalities in film making, ethnology and journalism. The Jury reserves the right to award one or several honorary mentions or not to give an award. The Jury´s decisions will be final.

The documentary films devoted to ethnology, social and cultural anthropology, which have been selected to enter the main international competition, shall compete to win the following awards:

The Golden Turon - GRAND PRIX
The Silver Turon
The Bronze Turon
VIA EUROPA Award - for the best film about European cultural heritage awarded by
Chairwoman of Žilina Self - Governing Region
Martin Slivka Award - for the best individual achievement of a Slovak filmmaker awarded by  Literary Foundation
Award of the Festival Director - for the best film reflecting the values of a region
Slovaks Around the World Award - for the best film about Slovaks living abroad awarded by the Mayor of Čadca
„Ethnologist Behind the Camera“ Award - awarded by Slovak Society of Ethnology
The Best Czech Film Award – awarded by The Embassy of the Czech Republic
Award of the Slovak Film Institute
Student Jury Award - awarded by the student jury - Kysucká kultúrna nadácia

The prize winners will be allowed to include the award in the credits of their film.

Submitting films to the Festival implies permission to the Organizer to use for free an excerpt, not exceeding three minutes, from the selected films as well as photos from the films in electronic and print media as well as in the Festival catalogue for promotion purposes.

The decisions of the Pre-Selection Jury shall be announced to the entrants by electronic mail and presented at the festival website by 15 August 2018.

Transport and insurance costs for the films to be delivered to the Festival are to be paid entirely by the entrant. This applies also to related expenses, in particular the fees of customs.



Upon submitting the entry form, the entrant undertakes to respect all provisions of these Regulations.

Both Slovak and English version of the Regulations are equal.

In the event of any dispute regarding the interpretation of these Regulations, the original Slovak wording shall prevail. The Festival Director will settle any complaints or disagreements that may arise during the preparations and the course of festival events and her decision will be final.



The Festival is run by the Organizing Committee led by the Festival Director. The Committee is responsible for the acceptance of films to international competition and the overall organization of the event as well as for the composition of the Pre-Selection Jury and International Jury.
